Projects at a Glance
EMPOWERING WOMEN
SWABHIMAAN, a charitable
trust in Bangalore, works
with AADHAAR to improve the lives of young girls and pregnant women
with limited exposure to education and healthcare. A multi-pronged
approach is followed by SWABHIMAAN:
- Educating as well as
nurturing young,
impressionable girls who are not cared for by their parents for a host
of reasons. About 15 young girls are benefited by this initiative.
- Running a
"mother-and-child clinic" for the
benefit of pregnant women living in slums. At a minimal fee, doctors do
periodic health check-up and provide the pregnant women supplementary
nourishment. Without such an initiative, the financially backward women
would not get the nutrients necessary during pregnancy.
- A micro-financing
project is in the pipeline
for slum-residing women with entrepreneurial drive. Since banks
generally do not provide loans to those with little or no stable
income, micro-financing is a boon to those who strive to get out of
poverty. It can also pave way for female empowerment, as the women can
also support their family financially.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
Rising energy requirements
in a developing country
like India is a major concern to the entire world. As the per capita
energy consumption of Indians increase, conventional sources of energy
are increasingly being exploited and depleted. This also results in
increased environmental pollution.
Environmental
responsibility and interest towards
green energy sources such as solar energy should start from the grass
roots-level. Realising this, AADHAAR is promoting the usage of green
energy sources in rural, underdeveloped regions of India. As a first
step, it has provided solar cookers and a solar water heater to the
"Samata Shikshan Sanstha", an organisation that is involved in
educating tribal and backward children in the Indian state of
Maharashtra. These equipments have been installed in the campus of a
school (Anandashram school in Pune district, Maharashtra) run by this
organisation; the school also has a wind and biogas plant, making it
unique in the whole region.
Such initiatives not only
reduce the dependency on
conventional energy sources, but also help in reducing environmental
pollution. Since India receives a great deal of sunshine throughout the
year, solar energy-dependant setups are not affected by the frequent
power failures in this country.

ISM students take regular tuitions of the slum children after their
school at the centers in the basti itself. However due to irregular
power supply in the basti, it creates a lot of problem for the
volunteers to take classes. So, AADHAAR has sponsored one Inverter and
Two batteries at this centre for supporting their noble work.

Sanmati Vidyalaya is
situated in Dhule. This
(north-west) part of Maharashtra is mainly populated by various tribal
communities and at the same time severely underdeveloped and plagued by
poverty. On several occasions parents and/or relatives find it
difficult to operate even minor health issues which are affecting the
life of a child or a relative severely on daily basis. In the wake of
all these adversities there was a serious need for a genuine initiative
to address such problems/situations. Sanmati Vidyalaya operated by
Late. Ratibai Maganlal Jain Public Trust in Dhule (Estb.: 1981), took
this much needed initiative to help such parents or people. With the
help of local physicians they also minimized the cost of
operations/surgery. AADHAAR has been collaborating with Sanmati
Vidyalaya previously (year 2008 & 2010) and decided to continue
supporting their initiative on an annual basis by financing 1000 € in
year 2011.

Subject:
Narayan Garh, a small village in the foothills (terai)
of Himalaya, tells a typical story of one of the underdeveloped places
in India, which is still deprived of basic infrastructure (education,
health, electricity, roads, communication, etc.). AADHAAR is taking a
lead to develop 0.7 acre land, which is owned by the village for common
use, to build AKC9 and providing facilities for village kid’s
education, a centre for vocational training for girls (e.g. sewing and
knitting) and for village youth (e.g. fishery, technical training,
etc.). The place will be further developed so that village kids and
youths have instant information about their career and markets.
Considering the amount of work needed to accomplish the overall
objective AADHAAR decided to take up this project in various phases -
construction of basic facility for AKC, providing facilities for the
library and vocational training centre for sewing and knitting, manning
the facility and making it self-sustainable, and providing alternate
energy sources like solar power units.
AADHAAR is helping in developing the site and the construction of the
basic facility will begin in October 2010 and is expected to be

In past, AADHAAR had
installed solar equipments
(e.g. water heater & cooker) with the help of IMPACT (Institute
for Energy and Resources at University of Twente) at other locations
(Pune and Dhule). Following the same way, AADHAAR decided to support
the proposal from Lokshikshan to install solar equipments including
water heater and solar lamps in two hostels for boys and girls each
(total 4), two dining rooms, and kitchen store room. The school is
located in hilly and rural area. Regular electric supply is rare.
Availability of these equipments has provided immense help to the
students at the residential school. This has also helped for the
planned use of renewable energy. Though occasional use of fossil fuel
i.e., gas, oil, wood etc. has not been eliminated completely, it has
been definitely reduced to a greater extend. Students are getting
consistent electricity power for study, and simultaneously supply of
hot water has helped to increase their health level. In this third such
collaboration of AADHAAR and IMPACT, it has contributed 2417 € as a
financial support for purchasing above mentioned various solar
equipments, including solar water heater (capacity: 500 Liters per day)
and solar lamps. The project has been successfully completed in October
2010.

Subject: Salary support of two
skilled health worker for year 2010.
Swabhimaan is a Public
Charitable Trust run by
Mr. Venket Iyer, which was registered in the year 2000 in Bangalore.
Swabhimaan in active in the area of Education for underprivileged,
Healthcare and Microcredit activities. Swabhimaan supported Mother and
Child Clinic is located in one of the largest slum clusters of
Bangalore called Rajendra Nagar. An estimated 7500 families live in
these slums. A major percentage of the families definitely live below
poverty line. The Issues confronting the community are generally the
same as in most other slums in cities. Some major issues are very poor
sanitation, poor quality drinking water, malnutrition among kids and
pregnant women. The Clinic was started in 2009 with an objective of
better nourishment to kids and good advice to mothers on issues of pre
natal, post natal, health and hygiene will hopefully help the families
avoid sicknesses and ailments. The Clinic has employed one capable
Doctor. The current expenses involve his salary, clinic’s rent, some
medicines that we dispense etc. Swabhimaan intend hiring two qualified
health workers to go Door to Door and advice women on all issues
relating to health, hygeine and nutrition. To support this part of the
project, AADHAAR has supported Mother and Child clinic by salary of two
health worker for a year 2010, which is approximately 96000INR (~1500
euros). The first installment of 16000 INR is already transferred to
Swabhimaan.
The
Surya hospital located
in Ambalappuzha, a coastal
village of Kerala, run by the Madam Curie Medical and Educational Trust
– a non-governmental, non-religious, non-commercial and non-political
trust, was started in 1985 by a group of like-minded doctors fresh from
their medical education aiming to provide basic health care services to
the common people. The doctors and many of the nursing and other staffs
here, work on an almost voluntary basis. The hospital charges much less
compared to the other hospitals for all health care services that it
offers.
Due
to the lack of modern
laboratory equipments, the doctors were
forced to refer the patients to commercial laboratories. The equipments
that the management considered as urgently needed for the up-gradation
of the laboratory were a semi-auto analyzer and a binocular microscope.
The hospital had Rs. 100000/- with them, while the procurement of the
two instruments needed a total of Rs. 230000/-.
Identifying
that the
hospital upholds the noble banner of medical
ethics and provide basic and affordable health care to one of the most
underprivileged communities in India, the fishermen, the AADHAAR
contributed Rs. 130000/- to the hospital which enabled them to procure
the instruments. Based on AADHAAR’s request, the manufacturer of Micro
Lab 300 and the local supplier of the equipment (LabX Systems,
Thiruvananthapuram) not only subsidized the cost of the equipment but
also provided several accessories and pigments necessary for running
the equipment, free of cost.
With the installation of these equipments the hospital is able to
conduct precision biochemical, microbiological and pathological tests
for very cheap costs as compared to other commercial laboratories.
AADHAAR will continue to support this laboratory depending on the need
will enable the hospital to facilitate affordable and precision
clinical laboratory services to the mostly poor patients who approach
this hospital for health care.
Location: SHED, House No:07,

District: Dhule, Maharashtra
Subject: Project proposal for AADHAAR
Knowledge Centre (AKC) at SHED, special school for the differently able
Children
SHED (Society for Health
& Educational Development), was established in 2007. SHED envisages
a just and peaceful society where disable and non-disable people enjoy
life in its fullness.
SHED is now running from a rented building which has a capacity to
accommodate around 50 children. The children admitted at present are in
the age group of 5 to 17 years. Many children come with academic
problem and their needs are appropriately not met by normal
instructions given at the school. It has been observed that the
children with differently able children did not get expected acceptance
either from the normal children or from the parents of the normal
children. There is limited facility for providing services to this
category of disabled populate. To address some of this issues AADHAAR
has taken an initiative to establish its 8th Knowledge Centre at SHED.
The financial support of 1.30 lakh INR (2150 euros) is confirmed. The
financial support from AADHAAR will be spent on new study materials,
books, furniture, computers and other infrastructure. The project will
be monitor by Mr. Lanu Aimol (Director of SHED) together with Mr. Wahid
Saleh and other well-wishers.
At present SHED is going through FCRA clearance process for smooth fund
transfer. It is expected that the project will be realized within 3
months once money is received at SHED.

This has solved the water problem of nearly 300 students.
Srivatsa Bettahalli
Location: Bettahalli village,
Amruthur hobli, Kunigal taluk, Karnataka state, INDIA
NBettahalli is a village in karnataka state of tumkur district which is
named because of adjacent hill/mountain with hindu temple.
It’s a small village populated approximately around 2000 people with
its own panchayat. The people here are mainly farmers with partly
irrigated lands. They are self sufficient but lack in good education
and healthcare. Although the village has government run school with
~100 kids, it lacks the study place for students after school hours.
The kids either wanders around killing their valuable time or start
helping their family slowly losing interest on education.
Hence we propose to build AADHAAR knowledge center which
is basically a
library
cum study center for kids, news paper & magazine center for adults
and counseling center with a dedicated person (graduate) to help
provide proper guidance and motivation to the kids (also care-taker of
the center).
The estimate to realize this knowledge center is around 2500Euros (Rs
165,000) which would include building cost (the land has been donated
free), furniture’s, books, and (sustainable) running cost.
Self sustainable running cost is expected to be achieved by livestock
rearing (2 cows). The project has been approved by Aadhaar committee.
(construction is temporarily suspended)

Subject: Installation of solar equipments
for sustainable energy to residential school
In the past, with
Aadhaar’s assistance, Samata Shikshan Sanstha has installed solar water
heaters & solar cookers at an ashram (residential) school known as
Anandashram Residential School at Talegaon-Dhamdhere, Pune-Maharashtra.
Sharing the same inspiration of making the residential school energy
independent through sustainable resources such as solar energy, Aadhaar
decided to sponsor installation of solar equipments at Morane. It is a
village located in a rural and more specifically underdeveloped tribal
part of state of Maharashtra in India. IMPACT (Institute of Mechanics,
Processes and Control-Twente) situated at the University of Twente
joined hand with Aadhaar and decided to cover entire amount of funding
necessary for this project. This also proved to be the starting point
for the continued successful collaboration of IMPACT and Aadhaar.
IMPACT contributed 2100
€ as a finantial support for purchasing ‘solar cookers’ (two
‘Parabolic’ type) for the preparation of daily meals of the students as
well as ‘solar water heater’ (800 L/day) for their daily water usage.
The procurement and installation of mentioned equipments required one
month after receiving the funding. Solar water heater system served
dual purpose i.e. in rainy & winter season, hot water is used for
sanitation purpose towards protecting the health of the student during
severe weather conditions, particularly in cold days, whereas, in
summer days the additional availability of the hot water helped for
soaking grains and cooking rice as well as making laundry. This indeed
helped to reduce the fuel & medical expenses which normally
occurred. In total around 150 residential students benefited from this
project.
903: Aadhaar Knowledge Centre (AKC - 4) at Hiwara, MS
Chandrashekhar U Murade
Hiwara Murade is remote
village in Amravati Dist. In state of Maharashtra in central part of
India (Mumbai province).
People from this village has great education awareness, this village
has produced many teachers, a doctor and some engineers. However now
day’s the village lacks education facilities in the village. Due to
this one who can afford to send their kinds to the cities for the
better education facilities do so, but the poor and bright student do
not get this opportunity. Group of villages came to know about the
AADHAAR activities from Chandra Murade and were impressed by AADHAAR
support to Eklavya academy. Villagers asked for the AADHAAR Knowledge
Centre in their village. They also promised to look after the AKC with
out any additional costs. This centre will be administrated by two
teachers from the village itself. Main objectives of this project are
to create a library, to provide computer education and to provide a
study room with 24 hr electricity facility. Since electricity is the
main problem in this region. Also various activities will be carried
out under this project such as special classes for the student and
agriculture awareness for the farmers.
Location: Hiwara Murade
District: Amravati, Maharashtra, India
Subject: AADHAAR knowledge Centre
AADHAAR members agreed

805: Classroom construction at Parijat Academy, Pamohi Assam Pramod Agrawal
Parijtat Academy is a
non-profit, non-religious
school for underprivileged children in one of the villages name Pamohi
on outskirts of Guwahati, Assam. It provides basic education to the
children of local stone quarry and rice field workers from seven tribal
villages. School does not have a regular source of funding and managed
by founder Mr. Uttam Teron with at least 10-12 other staff on volunteer
basis. One of the biggest challenges for the academy is not having

Parijtat Academy is a
non-profit, non-religious
school for underprivileged children in one of the villages name Pamohi
on outskirts of Guwahati, Assam. It provides basic education to the
children of local stone quarry and rice field workers from seven tribal
villages. School does not have a regular source of funding and managed
by founder Mr. Uttam Teron with at least 10-12 other staff on volunteer
basis. One of the biggest challenges for the academy is not having
proper infrastructure. Before Aadhaar decided to support, the academy
had two separate small constructions with four rooms with tin roof and
bamboo walls.
Surrounding view of the class room
AADHAAR conducted
independent survey of the
location by one of the Aadhaar members. After the survey we principally
agree to support the Academy. Aadhaar contributed 2100 € towards
construction of the 500 sq. feet class room for the kids. The financial
support came from MESA+ institute of Nanotechnology of University
Twente, the Netherlands. The class room is now ready for education
purpose.

was established in 1999
by sport teacher Sadanand Jadhav (President best teacher award winner).
Main motivation of the academy is to train rural students in the filed
of archery and yoga to participate at state, national and international
level. Students from this academy have received more than 37 national
gold medals uptill now, the number of medals indicates the quality of
the training and the dedication of the students and the teacher. Having
said this, the academy face serious financial problem, such as state of
art equipments to participate at national and international level.
Unavailability of state of art equipment is the main reason behind
their poor performance at international level not the quality of the

(see also project 905)
Samata Shikshan Sanstha
has been established in
1972 for the educational empowerment of backward and tribal children.
Then onwards it has undertaken various projects and activities
including child care centers for tribal children and nutritious food
centers for the children living in slums. One such initiative is
Anandashram Residential School at Talegaon-Dhamdhere. A consistent
supply of electricity and/or energy has always been a major problem at
Anandarshram, which hampered the life of residential students on daily
basis. Aadhaar decided to support them to become partially energy
independent by providing financial assistance for purchasing solar
equipments. Aadhaar has contributed 1500 € as a financial support to
the Anandashram for purchasing "solar cookers" (two "Box" and one
"Parabolic" type) for the preparation of daily meals of the students as
well as "solar water heater" (400 L/day) for their daily water usage.

The procurement and
installation of mentioned
equipments required two months after receiving the funding. Since the
solar cooker and the water heater have been installed, they have
provided great convenience to the residential school (~150) students.
They can now easily get warm water for sanitation purpose not only
during shivering winter time but also all the year long. Solar cookers
have provided an environmentally benign route to cook food for all the
students. That is not only saving the large amount of energy but also
the cost which can then be efficiently invested into other essential
amenities for the well fare of residential students.

The funding was utilized for payment of cost of operations and/or
medical treatments of 12 children in total. The health problems
included treatment of Hepatitis B, urine disorder, surgical treatment
of facial cleft etc. Through this project Aadhaar effectively assisted
Sanmati vidyalaya for giving a helping hand to the needy families and
bringing back the life of affected children and/or individuals to

AADHAAR Knowledge Centre - 2Pramod Agrawal
The second and self
sustainable AADHAAR knowledge center, founded in Multai town in central
India, has its own mini-library, book bank and computer room for the
village students. This AKC open within a school premises which will
keep the overall cost of the project low (€ 1000) and better

This project was funded
by the money generated from the contribution of the employees of the
faculty of CTW of University of Twente, who generously decided to forgo
their Christmas gift of 2007 for a noble cause. Learning from the
experience of first AKC at Soundad, it was decided to make second AKC
self sustainable since the beginning.
For this a photocopy machine was purchased, which is capable of
generating revenue enough for smooth running of the knowledge center.
This knowledge centre has four school owned computers through which
students below poverty line can be trained and have Internet facility
for common man, so that they can be connected to the outside world.

SWABHIMAAN, a charitable
trust in Bangalore, works with AADHAAR to improve the lives of young
girls and pregnant women with limited exposure to education and
healthcare since 2007. A multi-pronged approach is followed by
SWABHIMAAN. About 16 young girls are benefited by this initiative.
Swabhimaan handles the educational and daily needs of 16 girls under
the age of 14, apart from its involvement in other social welfare
activities. Till last year (2009) all the girls used to stay in a house
of Mr. and Mr. Iyer (Trustee of Swabhimaan). Since this year all the
girls were moved to their respective homes; however the bond between
girls and Swabhimaan remains same.

Impressed by this grassroots approach, the Dean of the Faculty of
Behavioral Science at University fo Twente (UT), Professor Hubert
Coonen has assured financial support for this project for next year as
well. In his opinion, the other faculties of the UT should also try and
support AADHAAR's cause in the long run to enable it to expand its
efforts through the development of new projects.

underdeveloped village in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The first
AKC has its own mini-library, book bank and computer room for the
underprivileged village students, who did not have access to any such
facilities earlier. The computer installed in this center has nearly
100 hours of educational software, including online school lessons from
renowned teachers across India, as well as a few motivational movies.
These facilities aside, the library also subscribes to 5 newspapers in
different languages, as well as a few magazines.

Soon we realize that it take more efforts and financial resources to
run the AKC than just establishing it. It was then possible to make
this AKC self sustainable by handing over a photocopy and lamination
machine. The financial support of €1500 for self sustainability was
received from CTW faculty at UT in 2007. This center has created very
good awareness about education and computers in the village and nearby
areas. In a nutshell, this knowledge center is a small step towards
